Lisa Mathews, Esquire

Lisa founded our firm in 2018 with the belief that a friendly and approachable perspective to law is the key to better client experiences. Since the beginning of her legal career, Lisa has focused on estate planning, making it a cornerstone of her practice. A proud graduate cum laude from Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University with an MBA from Indiana University and a B.A. from Brigham Young University, Lisa is licensed in both Virginia and Maryland. Lisa is also an adjunct professor at her alma mater. Prior to law school, she worked at Fidelity Investments as a people and project manager for 12 years gaining extensive knowledge of the retirement industry.

Beyond the legal realm, Lisa enjoys quality time with her nephews, playing the flute, and cruising around Old Town, Alexandria on her bike.

Amanda Syphus, Paralegal

Amanda is our dedicated paralegal who joined Mathews Law in 2020. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team, having earned her B.A. in Political Science from Brigham Young University and later obtaining an M.A. in Teaching from Texas Woman’s University. With a remarkable background spanning over 10 years as a high school social studies teacher, Amanda’s attention to detail and organizational skills make her an invaluable asset to our clients. Behind the scenes, Amanda is the unsung hero ensuring that Mathews Law runs seamlessly, with a personal touch that reflects our commitment to excellence.

Beyond her professional expertise, Amanda cherishes her free time spent with family, exploring new destinations through travel, immersing herself in a good book, and giving back to the community through volunteering.

Patti Papworth, Legal Assistant

Patti Papworth is our dedicated legal assistant at Mathews Law.  She is passionate about guiding our clients through the estate planning process and carries a strong commitment to making it a smooth and enjoyable experience.  With a B.A. in Vocal Performance from Utah State University and over 20 years of teaching experience, Patti brings a unique blend of patience and precision to her role, ensuring that clients feel supported and well-informed every step of the way.  Patti is an essential part of the team!

Beyond the office, Patti loves to perform and currently sings in a small women’s ensemble.  She also enjoys organizing and decorating homes, traveling, and being outside. Time spent with her family and music students reflect her caring approach both personally and professionally.
